Description

Charles I (1625-1649) Halfcrown, S2780, Tower Mint under Parliament, Sun mm as struck 1645-46, VF35 ANACS, dark gray surfaces, uncracked and full but odd-shaped flan, an ancient scratch through the horseman, nicely struck overall with the horse having a ghost, being struck twice, his head clearly doubled as if neighing, and this produces an enchanting version of the very last halfcrown issue of this type. Soon the king would be fleeing for his life and holed up here and there, as Cromwell's army pursued him, and he would set up temporary mints which created for students of his money a wide variety of fascinating and often crudely made issues. They have endured for us to enjoy, after he perished.
