Description

Charles I gold Crown ND (1629-1630) AU55 NGC, Tower mint (under Charles I), Heart mm, KM136, S-2712, Brooker-197-198. (heart) CAROLVS [MA BR] | FR' • ET HI' • REX, crowned, ruffled bust of Charles left, denomination (V) behind / • CVITORIS SVI • DEVS • PROTEGIT (heart), crowned royal shield. An often abused smaller gold type well-known for its unevenness of strike and weak portraiture, and yet here displaying an almost fanciful appearance that blends these usual traits with a seemingly higher focus on detail. The king's bust, for instance, is notably pronounced in sharp relief against the fields surrounding, his ruffles, facial features, and the jewels of his crown all struck-up. Undoubtedly more eye-appealing than most examples, and worthy of close consideration as such.
