Description

Charles II Crown 1679, S3358, D3776, 30.04g, 3rd Bust, T. PRIMO edge, AU50 NGC and a well-balanced, carefully chosen piece with handsome dark gray surfaces and an even strike. Metal flow from striking is plainly evident, as are die deficiencies transferred to the coin (little bumps that were flaws or rust in the dies). Most pleasing for this grade! Scarce, as are all Charles II crowns that grade above VF. (Incorrectly ID'd as 4th Bust on the grading insert.) A very desirable coin made about a dozen years after the Great Fire of London wiped out most of the wooden medieval city. Wouldn't it have been a treat to have had this in your pocket as you discussed the pressing news of the day in some London coffeehouse!
From the Grundy Collection.
