Charles II gold "Coronation" Medal 1661 MS62 NGC, Eimer-221, MI-I-472/76. 29mm. 9.75gm. By T. Simon. Superbly rare as a type, not least for its very rare incidence on the auction market, but perhaps even more so as the first portrayal of Charles II on a milled issue. Engraved by Thomas Simon, a master of the period renowned for his iconic Petition and Reddite Crowns of 1663 as well as his earlier pattern Broads of Oliver Cromwell, this medal is peculiar for its comparatively small size and somewhat low-relief designs, producing much more of the feel of a coin or jeton. This is similar to the coronation medals of his predecessors, perhaps suggesting that the exploitation of this medium was still taking shape and being developed by the monarchy. For reference, we have offered only one other example of this type in gold--an MS61--which brought $13,200 in August 2018 ANA Platinum Night sale.
