Description

Charles II silver "Presentation" Medal ND (c. 1683) AU55 NGC, Eimer-267, MI-595-277. 53mm. By J. Roettiers. CAROL II D G ANGL SCOT FRAN ET HIB REX Draped bust of Charles II right // Royal arms within the Garter, supports and crest; DIEV ET MON DROIT in banner in exergue. The Medallic Illustrations reference only notes that "It is probable that it was intended for distribution as a present by the King." Chris Eimer adds, "The portrait of the king places the medal towards the latter part of his reign, and the royal arms suggests that it might have an official function. The occurrence of examples with a suspension loop or the remnants of one also point to the possibility of this being an award medal." The Medals of this type were included in Victor's Morin's Les Médailles Décernées aux Indiens (1915) and are part of a century-old North American collecting tradition.

Ex. Donald G. Partrick Collection (Heritage Auction #1330, March 2021, Lot 15480); John J. Ford Jr. Collection Part XVI(Stack's, October 1982, Lot 7); A.H. Baldwin & Sons, Ltd., (November 1964)
