Description

Enigmatic Mule 1651 Half Crown

Commonwealth Mule 1/2 Crown 1651 VF Details (Surface Plated) PCGS, Tower mint, Sun mm, cf. KM391.1 (for regular issue), cf. S-3215, ESC-19 (R7; 2 Known; prev. ESC-428). 5.85gm. A most intriguing and enigmatic issue, and certainly one of the significant rarities of the entire Commonwealth series. While the origins of such a curiosity are unknown, the result is undeniably fascinating. Featuring a Shilling obverse and a drastically larger 1/2 Crown reverse, the partial legends are struck just off of the Shilling-sized flan. This specimen exhibits evidence of an earlier silvering that has mellowed to a light champagne glow and worn away after time, revealing fine pewter-patinated surfaces beneath.
