Description

Cromwell Crown 1658/7, S-3226, AU58 PCGS, light blue tone. The typical obverse die break is very slight on this Crown, and that, in itself, is unusual. Most of these Crowns have a heavy die break. The die must have broken early, and since the mint was already behind in releasing the coins into circulation (note the 8 over a 7), they couldn't/wouldn't take the time to repair the die. Other Cromwell Crowns have the die break ground down (as seen in the lot above). It was ground and considered "repaired" in antiquity in the mistaken belief that this would improve the coin. As a point of interest, the date has quite a strong double punching of the 8.
