Description

Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1363-1369) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Cross Potent mm, Treaty Period, S-1503, N-1232, Schneider-87. 7.68gm. (annulet) ЄD | WΛRD: DЄI: GRΛ: RЄX: ΛnGL': DnS: hyB' x Z (retrograde) x ΛQ | T' (double saltire stops), Edward crowned, standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / + IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBAT (double saltire stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. Produced during the Treaty of Brétigny wherein Edward III dropped his claim to the French throne and thus omitted his French title from his coins. Fielding a remarkably sound strike for the issue even given the trace doubling present in portions of the legends, with a pleasing clarity present over the king's face. Generally few instances of handling exist over the surfaces, while the flan is only mildly undersized. For the sake of comparison, we would note that the last example we offered in this grade--not nearly as attractive--brought $13,200 in our August 2021 ANA sale.
