Description

Edward III gold Noble ND (1361-1369) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, S-1503, N-1232. Cross Potent mm, Treaty Period. (annulet) ЄD | WΛRD: DЄI: GRΛ: RЄX: ΛnGL': DnS: hyB' x Z (retrograde) x ΛQ | T' (double saltire stops), Edward crowned, standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left // + IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLORVm: IBAT (double saltire stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. Produced under the terms of the Treaty of Brétigny wherein Edward III dropped his claim to the French throne and thus omitted his French title from his coins. Featuring satiny luster and remarkable crispness to the motifs despite its age and the historical tumult surrounding its issue in the 14th century. The devices and legend display the usual doubling from the hammering process, though what is visible around the peripherals is considerably legible. Assuredly a numismatic spectacle for the enthusiast of British history.
