Description

R4 Gem Proof 1957 Sovereign

Elizabeth II gold Proof Sovereign 1957 PR65 NGC, S-4124, W&R-449 (R4). By Mary Gillick. Finely Milled edge (168 ridges instead of the usual 108). One year type. A magnificent specimen, both in rarity and in preservation. Captivating Proof expanses glow when in motion, revealing flashes of amber as the detailed bust of a young Queen Elizabeth rises from pondlike surfaces. An extremely collectible issue, as it was the first Sovereign struck under the new Monarch. The Queen's portrait by Gillick is adorned with a laurel wreath, a common motif found on British coinage up until the nineteenth century and subsequently reintroduced for Elizabeth's reign.

Due to post-war austerity measures no gold coins were included in the Queen's Coronation set released to the public, with only a small number of 1953 Coronation gold coins presented to high ranking officials and institutions to mark the occasion. The issuing of Sovereigns had been on hiatus due to the First and Second World Wars, meaning the 1957 issue was the first struck in nearly two decades when considering what was made available to the public. Sovereign 1957 Proofs are incredibly rare, with estimates of known pieces ranging between 11 and 20.
