Description

George III Farthing 1799, S3779, Soho Mint, 3 berries, MS63 BN PCGS, but the cataloguer is mystified by the numerical grade, for this coin has nearly perfect surfaces (just one or two ancient abrasions can be seen under magnification), the luster is a lovely medium mahogany brown, swirls with cartwheel quality and even the flow lines produced during striking are evident, some faded golden luster remains, the strike is quite bold with almost full tiny details showing in Britannia, but the dies were old and worn, which produced a subtle portrait of King George. Not sure what PCGS expects to see in a Gem, but to the cataloguer this is it. Very scarce so fine, as most seen in the UK and elsewhere are far less in quality. Many pieces were rejected as not good enough before this lovely coin was selected for the present collection. A beautiful farthing!
