Description

George III pattern Crown by Webb & Mills for Mudie ND (1820), ESC-221, silver, plain edge, PR63 NGC, delicate pinkish gold and silvery gray toning, sparkling with reflective luster, the reverse especially appealing, the obverse showing some small scuffs and abrasions. The king's portrait is elongated and somewhat medallic in appearance, therefore standing out among royal portraits as unusual, while the reverse is decorated with the unusual combination of a rose, thistle, shamrock and Hanover horse in the field of the cruciform shield while the shield itself features the normal insignia plus another prancing horse, all surrounding a depiction of the Order of the Garter at center. A charming piece, never very popular and seemingly overlooked for its artistry.
