Description

Magnificent Pattern Ornamented-Shield Military Guinea

George III Pattern gold Guinea 1813, W&R119 (R6, extremely rare, 3-5 known), reeded edge, PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, a few faint scuffs in the frost of the portrait, and almost invisible hairlines on the obverse field, are all that separate this gorgeous specimen from perfection. The reverse is unqualifiedly superb. Rose, thistle and shamrocks surround a crowned crest on reverse. Portrait by Thomas Wyon, whose initial "W" is bold beneath the truncation of the king's portrait. The engraving is both deep and exquisitely fine, from the hand of a master of the art. This is one of four types of patterns made for the coming Military Guinea of this year, which appear in variant forms (W&R113-123), and it would not be a stretch to name this one as the most elegant of the suggested designs. If you collect guineas or patterns or George III's coins, this lot represents a serious collecting opportunity. Possibly the Douglas-Morris specimen auctioned by Sotheby's of London in 1974.
