S-PS1. A simply stunning assemblage of coins, and the first complete set of the type that we have ever offered. While individual proof coins from 1826 cross the auction block with some regularity, it is quite a noteworthy opportunity for a full 11-piece set to appear at auction. The most recent offering that we can find of a set being sold was by the German firm Künker in February, 2012, where an ungraded set hammered at 55,000 euros (or $72,445 at the time). The second most recent sale that we could find was by St. James in May, 2009, where another ungraded set sold for a hammer price of 22,500 GBP (or $33,891). In that period of less than three years, one can see that the set more than doubled in value; in the five years since one has been offered, the market has only gotten stronger, and so in many respects the sky is the limit for this set. While those other two sets mentioned were raw, we feel that it would be hard to rival some of the coins in the set on offer here, especially the 1/2 sovereign in PR67 Ultra Cameo and the 2 Pounds in PR65 Ultra Cameo. This is certainly a lovely set, and worthy of the the finest collection of British proof coins. Sold with the original case of issue.
