Description

Charming and Choice George IV 5 Pounds

George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM702, S-3797, W&R-213 (R3). Lettered edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Mintage: 150. One of many testaments to William Wyon's abilities, and certainly one of his earlier works in a long, illustrious career with the British Royal Mint, this 1826 5 Pounds was designed for inclusion in the monarch's mid-reign Proof Set. A monumental emission and the return of these wholly appreciable and expansive gold types that last saw production nearly 75 years prior with the 1753 5 Guineas of George II. Offered here is a resplendent representative of the first of the famed 5 Pounds series, deeply reflective and enhanced by a fully frosted and sensitively rendered portrait of George, all too deserving of its Deep Cameo designation. A clear candidate for the British enthusiast seeking a high-profile trophy.
