    Description

Astonishing PR66 Ultra Cameo 5 Pounds

George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM702, S-3797, L&S-27, W&R-213 (R3). Lettered edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Mintage: 150. Truly a masterpiece of the early engraving of William Wyon that would help propel his 23-year-long career as the Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, it would seem an understatement to call this gorgeous one-year 5 Pounds Ultra Cameo--the devices are so thickly overlaid in mint frost and the fields bathed in sparkling reflectivity as to leave utterly little wanting in terms of its technical execution. Produced as part of the monarch's mid-reign 1826 Proof Set, the portraiture executed by Wyon on the issue seems to add a new degree of prominence to Merlen's already flattering effigy drawn from the style of Sir Francis Chantrey, idealizing his features and seeming to abstract any sense of the king's real-life portly stature. Notably missing from the Terner Collection, with the Tyrant example ranking as a PR65+ Cameo, this incredible specimen stands alongside just one other representative as the finest of type certified across both NGC and PCGS combined--for reference, the PR64 Ultra Cameo-certified specimen that we offered in 2017 brought an incredible $305,000, and more recently a PR62 achieved $198,000 in our August Platinum Night Sale, suggesting that the interest in such a fine piece as this will surely top the charts. An unmissable opportunity, and undoubtedly a crown jewel for even the most scrupulous of British coin cabinets.
