Description

George IV gold Proof Sovereign 1825 PR63 Cameo NGC, KM696, S-3801, W&R-236 (R5). Reeded edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. A classic entry within the George IV gold Proof series and one which very clearly drives home the reasons why the type remains so fiercely contested by collectors, the style of king's windblown hair as rendered by Wyon provides all of the perfect recesses for generous mint frost while the surfaces cameo nicely around, revealing thick ranks of die polish when rotated under good light. Presently ranking amongst the highest numerically graded specimens at either NGC or PCGS, its absolute rarity is confirmed by Wilson and Rasmussen's R6 rating, suggesting a mere 6-10 known.
