Description

Brilliant Uniface Pattern Proof Crown in Barton's Metal

George IV Reverse Uniface Pattern Proof "Barton's Metal" Crown ND (1825) PR64 PCGS, cf. KM-Pn90 (standard Pattern Crown for 1825), ESC-2334 (R6). By W. Wyon and J. B. Merlen. Part of a series of Patterns for George IV's first gold coinage, struck as Uniface trial pieces in gold-electrolyzed copper, a metal type nicknamed "Barton's Metal" for the Deputy Comptroller of the Royal Mint John Barton. Heritage was fortunate enough to sell an entire set of these "Barton's Metal" Patterns in May of this year, which is incredibly impressive in its completeness, but the example of the type offered again here was notably inferior to the the present selection. This near-Gem specimen is bold, bright, and brilliant, reminiscent of an actual gold Pattern piece, which is a credit to the designers.
