Description

James II Crown 1687, S3407, 2nd Bust, TERTIO edge, MS63 PCGS, another really pleasing example of this scarce 3-year type (having two subtly different portraits among the years). Noticeable tiny carbon flecks ("haymarks") that are endemic of the metal quality of almost all silver flans of this monarchy, but on this wonderful coin the dies were not of the usual pebbly texture, and the strike is both sharper and more balanced than is usually encountered, producing a coiner's masterpiece of sorts in this specimen. Its luster is subtle but distinct beneath rich, medium gray toning. The dies were beautifully centered when this one was struck. Better examples exist, but not by a wide margin, and most of those are locked up in museums or in collections that may never come to market. So, here is a great opportunity to acquire rarity of condition that has never been fully reflected in the values given to the rare coins of this short-lived king.
