Description

Thomas Simon's Cromwell Masterpiece

Oliver Cromwell Crown 1658/7, S3226, D3773, 30.10g, by Thomas Simon, early state of the obverse die break, MS64 NGC, a splendid and very choice example exhibiting "hard" or semi-prooflike luster, a crisp strike, the usual high rim denticles, and an elegant if somewhat subtle toning that is a delightful mixture of rich medium gray and delicate amber gold iridescence with bluish hues. The famous pebbly finish to the Protector's visage and on the reverse crest pops out at the eye, remaining a testament to Simon's genius at coinage portraiture. Quite rare in this outstanding state, and highly desirable as one of the finest of all metallic engravings -- a classic, much like a Dutch painting masterpiece of the same era. The important and distinct reverse legend "Peace Is Sought By War" (translated from Latin) remains an iconic irony of constant relevance to mankind's folly. As well, this coin marks a double departure, or sea change, in English numismatics: its technical glory put to death forever the manufacture of money by hammered method, and the era it represents marked the beginning of the end for monarchical power on the island, as all Parliaments beginning with the Restoration (of Charles II) held all the real authority over governance of the citizens, and all future kings' and queens' power was essentially titular. Few other coins throughout history have stood for such essential change. Here indeed is a magnificent coin, and a sheer work of unparalleled art!
