Oliver Cromwell Shilling 1658, S3228, MS63 NGC, a beautiful Choice UNC example, in fact among the nicest ones to come to auction recently, boldly made with a medallic portrait and fully struck crowned crest on the reverse, showing off Thomas Simon's engraving handiwork just magnifiCently, fields reflective and almost immaculate, legends crisp, centering excellent on both dies with high rims and very sharp vertical edge reeding, and exceptional eye appeal because of rich deep gray toning with magenta hues over the lustrous surfaces. The classic die flaws appear on each side: the two long "commas" at the top of the Protector's forehead, the bubbles of die rust in front of his nose as well as above and behind his head, and the tiny bubbles and die-tool marks in the reverse field. Simon was perhaps the finest coin engraver who ever lived, and his Cromwell coins are sheer Renaissance genius at its apex. If you've been wanting a wonderful Cromwell Shilling, here it is!
