Description

Trade Dollar 1895Bi, KM-T5, frosty BU, the mm is incuse. The British Trade Dollar was issued in response to a shortage of silver Dollars in the Far East. The obverse design of a standing Britannia was chosen so that the coin would be accepted throughout many countries. The reverse shows a Chinese labyrinth and values given in Chinese and Malay--all within a Chinese scroll pattern border. It was struck at the Bombay mint (with and without mm), Calcutta, and later in London.
From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.
