Description

Victoria gold "Ansell" Sovereign 1859 AU53 NGC, KM736.3, S-3852E, Marsh-42A. Of immense scarcity within the Victorian Sovereign series, the so-called Ansell Sovereigns--named for experiments of Royal Mint official George Frederick Ansell--are known from only around 15-25 examples according to Marsh, their elusiveness a result of Ansell's experiments in striking coins from confiscated brittle gold. Wholly attractive, with largely undisturbed fields that display original, as-made die polish lines and retain significant luster. Shockingly few marks are observed, and confirm this piece as not only exceptional for the grade, but also among the most visually compelling of all survivors of the type. Easily among the finest we have offered of this coveted rarity, and thus certain to generate significant enthusiasm among collectors of this vastly popular series.
