Description

Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR62 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM744, S-3883, ESC-2579 (R2). Plain edge. M over inverted M in DOM variety. Struck in pure silver. By far a type whose general popularity usually outstrips the individual rarity of the few known 'minor' varieties between coins, collectors of the Gothic crown series will nevertheless know full well the comparative difficulty of plain edge versus lettered edge examples, particularly in indisputably Deep/Ultra Cameo grades. Indeed this coin is entirely night-and-day in its light-dark contrasts, with a heavy sheen of frost prominently picking out each individual element of the design in fully expressed, untoned detail. All the more intriguing for its scarce error legend with an M over inverted M in DOM--a subvariety noted by Bull but largely absent from sales archives--a variety of which we have only handled one example previously, and by and large not an 'average' Gothic crown.

Metal: Silver
Diameter: 39mm
