Conditionally Rare, Stunning William & Mary 5 Guineas
Struck from Gold Taken from the Gambia River
William & Mary gold "Elephant & Castle" 5 Guineas 1692 MS63
PCGS, Royal mint, Fr-300 S-3423. An outstanding representative
of the type with glowing, lemon-tinged surfaces that support fully
rendered motifs. Almost immediately the eye is drawn to the
conjoined portraits of William and Mary which express crisp
definition throughout. Below their busts sits the famous Elephant
and Castle hallmark which confirms that the gold used to mint this
coin came from the mines operated by the Royal African Company. The
reverse illustration is even more involved, displaying a superbly
decorated, crowned-shield design, accented by shell wings and
elaborately-detailed flair. As is noted by the designation, a few,
very minor ticks are observed in the obverse fields, along with
subtle haymarking and one rose-colored toning spot on the King's
neck. A coin that has been carefully preserved for over three
centuries--presently the highest-certified example of the date by
PCGS or NGC--and decidedly worthy of even the finest cabinets
containing British gold rarities.
