William I, the Conqueror (1066-1087) Penny ND (1074-c. 1077) AU55 NGC, Cricklade mint, Leofred as moneyer, Two Stars type, S-1254, N-845, EMC-1012.0079 (this coin). 1.40gm. +?ILLEM REX AN, crowned and diademed bust of William facing between two stars / +LIOFRED ON CRIC, cross botonnee over quadrilateral with incurved sides and annulet at center. A notably rare mint for this already scarce type, with auction results from the last 15-20 years revealing only around 8 other specimens from Cricklade coming up for sale, almost all of which were PAXS pieces and none of which were of the Two Stars type; compare this with the Early Medieval Corpus maintained by the Fitzwilliam Museum, which records only 16 coins from this mint in total and only one other Two Stars specimen (of Wulfstan). Needless to say, a superb rarity of the early Norman series, and one which preserves a great deal of detail with just some mild doubling on the obverse for its time spent in the ground.
