William III Crown 1695, S3470, D3781, 29.93g, First Bust, OCTAVO edge, MS61 NGC, residual luster, a couple of small adjustments through the king's laurel, the reverse particularly sharp in strike, both sides nicely centered, and appealing old-time iridescent golden gray toning provides exceptional eye appeal. During this reign, which preceded the extraordinarily exuberant days of the wealthy and rotund Queen Anne (whose guide through politics was Sarah Churchill), an era of luxury for England's upper and merchant classes, the Royal Mint undertook what has come to be known as the Great Recoinage, in which regional mints were briefly established for the purpose of taking in old, broken, even partial coinage, by weight, in return for newly minted coins, and this accounts for the availability today of most denominations in nicer grades (though few remain without some evidence of circulation). Nonetheless, crowns as fine as this one are quite scarce.
