Description

William IIII Proof Halfcrown 1831, S-3834A, KM-714.1, PF60 NGC. The amount of mishandling on this piece is quite astounding given the rarity of this Proof only date. It is always enjoyable to compare rare coins when they come up for auction. The W.W. on the truncation are the "block" style, but the photo in Spink shows a much shorter W.W. It almost appears as if the W.W. was repunched a second time, making it look somewhat lower than the first punch, causing the elongated the letters. The edge denticles are not as deep and pronounced as the following piece. It is interesting to note the variables for this issue regarding die axis, edge and Wyon's initials. Perhaps they were struck past 1831?
