Description

William IIII Proof Halfcrown 1831, S-3834A, KM-714.1, PF64 NGC, Plain Edge. This coin has a small W.W. in the block similar to the photo in Spink, but different than the previous lot. The second W. is slightly double-punched. Perhaps the mint officials were not happy with the centering of the letters on the king's truncation and tried to rectify it. As noted above, the denticles are stronger and larger, and a few of the obverse letters have obviously been repunched. The color is the deep blue, as has been found on coins that were stored for a long time in their original box of issue.
