Exceptional Cameoed William IV Proof Crown

William IV Proof Crown 1831 PR64 Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM715, S-3833, ESC-273 (R4), L&S-3 (Listed as a pattern). Plain edge variety with "W.WYON." on truncation in raised capital letters with serifs, medal-rotation die alignment. A spectacular selection with incredible eye appeal at every turn, showing a delicate layer of champagne color across both sides and indisputable cameo contrast that produces satin-sheathed devices cradled by flashy mirrors. A few instances of darker tone dapple the fields; however, aside from the occasional wisps, the open expanses remain free of any obtrusive post-strike marks. The high-relief portrait of William IV is on full, glorious display, and upon closer inspection, the intricately detailed reverse motif pleases even the most discriminating eye. A tremendous rarity in its own right, and one that shows the complete last name of engraver William Wyon in raised fashion, which was later reduced to his initials in an incuse format. The only other example we have handled of this complexity in recent past was sold in our 2014 New York Auction (Formosa Collection) and that coin (PCGS PR64) hammered for $37,500. Sold with a Spink & Son ticket.
