Description

A Major Pre-Victorian Rarity in Superb Grade

William IV Proof Crown 1834, S3833, ESC275 (as R5), L&S6, type of KM715, plain edge, coin rotation die alignment, PR66 Cameo NGC, a superb specimen and technically close to perfection, without hairlines or marks other than the faintest possible signs of a few wispy contacts, the important rims blemish-free, and graced by a lovely sheen of delicate silvery gray iridescence atop still highly reflective fields, against which the large open portrait is set in delicate contrast, with its frosted appearance. You hear the comment regularly that this or that coin is a "miracle of survival" and here, on this wonderful crown, it seems most condign, for how could such a large coin escape even the slightest abrasion or mishandling all these years after it was minted? Linecar and Stone referred to this as a pattern, but in reality it is a Proof of Record, made according to the law of 1800 so as to assure that a few examples of the coinage would be maintained in museums, to which typically they were sold during the 19th century. We could wax ecstatic for many more sentences about this glorious coin, but suffice to say that it is the finest example we have seen. The 2011 SCBC places a value on an FDC specimen at £24,000. Worldwide bidders will decide its actual value, but whatever it sells for it will be all but irreplaceable once hammered down. A numismatic treasure.
