Description

Kings of Wessex. Aethelwulf (839-858) Penny ND (854-858) AU50 NGC, Rochester mint, Aethelmod as moneyer, Inscribed Cross type, S-1051, N-618 (R; described as "majority or all Canterbury mint"), cf. SCBI I (Fitzwilliam)-528 (likely Canterbury issue), SCBI II (Hunterian)-550 (same), SCBI XX (Mack)-717 (same), SCBI LXVII (British Museum)-Unl., MEC VIII-Unl., cf. EMC-1068.0583 (different dies, but Rochester style), Naismith-R39.1b (this coin). 1.30gm. +ΛEÐELVVLF REX, diademed, draped bust of Aethelwulf right / +EDEΓM | OD | MO arranged on limbs of beaded cross, N | E | T | Λ around. A more singular bust style from Aethelwulf's rule which typically recycles the portraits of surrounding reigns, featuring an elongated, egg-shaped head and a pronounced, flat nose. Evenly patinated in an even argent hue, the specimen preserves a full outer border, serious bending appearing generally absent while few singular surface marks are detectable. Interestingly, North supposed that Aethelwulf's Inscribed Cross coinage was almost exclusively produced at Canterbury.
