Description

William I the Conqueror (1066-1087) Penny ND (1068-1070) VF25 PCGS, Unidentified mint and moneyer (possibly Cinric on Thetford), Bonnet type, S-1251, N-842. 19mm. 1.02gm. +?ILLEM REX, crowned and diademed bust of William facing with two fillets at each side of head / +MOTNEFCIINRI (first I struck over O or annulet), voided cross with annulet in center, pellet between two crescents at end of each limb, piles in angles. A perplexing piece to say the least, most particularly because of the heavily garbled reverse legend. While the first two letters are somewhat obscure, the ending of the legend does appear remarkably to resemble the moneyer's name Cinric, who according to North, is known only from the mint of Thetford. Nonetheless a quite scarce type from William's reign, and surely a curiosity piece for its next owner's cabinet. Sold with old collector's envelope and dealer's tag.
