Description

Athens Mint Conditional Rarity

Othon 5 Drachmai 1844 MS62 NGC, Athens mint, KM20, Divo-10d (RR), Dav-115. An wonderful Greek Crown-size series that saw production in Munich, Paris, and Athens; the Athens examples, such as the one seen here, were produced in their home country, in the smallest quantities, and are generally the most sought after by collectors. This issue is of palpable rarity in high grade, rarely coming to market in quality AU condition, let alone certified Mint State. Though the most important mint state qualities are clear and obvious, this piece does exhibit quite a unique toning pattern; it is quite patchy but idiosyncratic and natural enough to be charming. The finest example of this heretofore presented by Heritage was an MS60 graded specimen, this near-Choice designated piece is a significant step up in quality and one of the finest certified examples extant.
