Amazing 1793 Half Cent
AU58, C-2, B-2

1793 1/2 C AU58 NGC. C-2, B-2, R.3. Obverse: L in LIBERTY is low, and TY is very low; the cap has three elaborate folds or wrinkles; the date is almost in a straight line at the top; and a defect is present as a spur at the top left of the 9. Reverse: There are 15 leaves on each branch; there is a large centered dot between HALF and CENT; the long fraction bar is bent downwards; and the 2 in the denominator nearly touches the left ribbon end.
Walter Breen, in his Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents, writes that the first half cent delivery of 7,000 pieces occurred on July 20, 1793. A second group of 24,934 coins followed on July 26, and a final batch of 3,400 on September 18, giving a grand total of 35,334 half cents.
This one-year type coin is usually available only in lower grades, particularly from Fair to Very Fine. Extremely Fine pieces are located with patience and searching, as are examples in lower About Uncirculated. High-end AU and Mint State specimens are elusive.
This is an amazing near-Mint State example that displays light to medium golden-orange patination and a good amount of luster. An attentive strike leaves strong definition on the well centered design elements. There are no marks of consequence on either side, and some minute die rust on the lower obverse does not detract from the coin's outstanding eye appeal. The reverse is rotated a few degrees clockwise relative to the obverse. Connoisseurs of early half cents will not want to miss out on this infrequent high-grade offering. Census: 17 in 58, 15 finer (11/08). EAC 45.
