Description

1793 C-2 Half Cent, AU50
Bold Detail, Partial Luster

1793 1/2 C C-2, B-2, R.3, AU50 PCGS. Cohen-2 pairs the obverse of Cohen-1 with the reverse of Cohen-3. The obverse of Cohen-3 struck Cohen-4, allowing numismatists to determine the striking order of the four die marriages of first-year half cents. The date is also a single-year type, since the Liberty Cap bust faces right on subsequent dates. This mahogany-brown and lavender example is well defined and displays light, even wear. We note only a narrow diagonal mark above the LF in HALF, and a minor rim knock near the U in UNITED. The median grade for C-2 in our auctions is Fine 12, and the variety is rarely seen in grades higher than the present lot.
