Description

1793 C-2, B-2 Half Cent, AU53
America's Second Half Cent Variety

1793 1/2 C C-2, B-2, R.3, AU53 PCGS. Production of the 1793 half cents took place in the summer with deliveries from the chief coiner to the Mint treasurer dated in July. Although Walter Breen wrote in his Half Cent Encyclopedia that an additional half cent delivery occurred in September, new research suggests that those pieces were cents rather than half cents.
Examples struck from the Cohen-2 die pair, as offered here, are considered the second half cents struck after the C-1 coins. All four varieties are important to variety specialists and type collectors. In addition to their status as the first half cents struck at the U.S. Mint, these coins also represent a single-year type coin. Splashes of dark patina in the left obverse field and below ST of STATES will identify this lovely AU example that features pleasing light brown surfaces. PCGS Population for all varieties: 14 in 53, 78 finer (3/26).
