Description

1793 C-2, B-2 Half Cent, VF25
First Year of Production

1793 1/2 C C-2, B-2, R.3, VF25 PCGS. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. The Philadelphia Mint began coinage for circulation with the copper half cents and cents of 1793, while silver coins appeared late in 1794, and gold coins in 1795. The 1793 half cents are also a single-year type coin with Liberty facing left. Two obverse dies and three reverse dies were combined in four die marriages for the 1793 half cents. The C-2 half cents were the second of those four varieties. We agree with William Eckberg's estimate of 250 to 325 surviving examples from these dies, and the majority of those are in low grades, typically with corrosion. Although a few faint hairlines are evident on the upper locks of Liberty's hair, this is an impressive example that is finer than most examples in today's marketplace. The surfaces are smooth chocolate-brown with slight verdigris around some leaves in the wreath.
