Description

1793 C-4, B-4 Half Cent, AU50
The Final 1793 Variety

1793 1/2 C C-4, B-4, Low R.3, AU50 NGC. This is the fourth and final 1793 half cent variety produced in the opening year of Philadelphia Mint coinage. The 1793 cents and half cents represent great historical importance as the first coins produced at that facility. Two obverse dies and three reverse dies were engraved for the half cents, and those dies were used in four different combinations. This example combined olive and light brown on both sides. Trivial rim marks are noted below the date and over AMERICA. The reverse shows many short flaws that remain from the planchet at the time this coin was struck. Retained from the time of manufacture, those flaws do not affect the grade. This is a lovely example of our nation's first half cent for the historically minded collector.
