Description

1793 C-4, B-4 Half Cent, AU50
Final First-Year Variety

1793 1/2 C C-4, B-4, Low R.3, AU50 NGC. This is the fourth and final 1793 half cent variety produced in the opening year of Philadelphia Mint coinage. The 1793 cents and half cents represent great historical importance as the first coins produced at that facility. The 1793 half cent is a single-year type, since the portrait faces right beginning in 1794. Two obverse dies and three reverse dies were engraved for the 1793 half cents, and those dies were used in four different combinations. This example displays olive-brown toning throughout. Trivial rim marks are noted below the date and over AMERICA. The reverse shows many short flaws that remain from the planchet at the time this coin was struck. Retained from the time of manufacture, those flaws do not affect the technical grade.
