Description

1793 C-4, B-4 Half Cent, VF25
The Final 1793 Variety

1793 1/2 C C-4, B-4, Low R.3, VF25 PCGS. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. Manley Die State 2.0. Fuhrman State 2. A small lump is attached to the top of the 7 in the date on this later die state. Each of the four 1793 varieties are approximately equal in rarity with the first die marriage, C-1, slightly scarcer than the other three. Current estimates suggest that between 250 and 300 examples of C-1 are known, and between 250 and 325 examples for each of the other three varieties. The stated mintage for all 1793 half cents was 35,334 coins, struck primarily in July with a small group in September. Recently, some researchers have questioned the September group. Pleasing medium brown surfaces show a few areas of lighter brown on this pleasing piece that is devoid of surface marks. Slight verdigris appears between leaves and around other devices on the reverse. Overall, this is an exceptional example for the grade and a piece that will make a nice addition to an advanced collection of early U.S. coinage.
