Description
Popular 1793 Half Cent, C-3, VF30
1793 1/2 C VF30 NGC. C-3, B-3, R.3. Only four varieties of 1793 half cents are known, and Cohen-3 is considered to be third in the emission sequence. The obverse of this variety is identified by a small 7 in the date and a low L in LIBERTY. On the reverse, the fraction bar is long and crowded between the ribbons. A total 35,334 half cents were struck in 1793 for all four varieties, and the C-3 ranks behind the C-4 in terms of availability. All examples are highly desirable because of their status as the first half cents struck at the newly opened Mint. This specimen has lovely olive-brown surfaces with scattered abrasions and minimal porosity. There are no marks of any significance, with a small planchet defect on the reverse at the first T in STATES noted. Despite traces of localized weakness and a few areas of die rust, this is a crisply struck and well-preserved example with nearly full border beads on each side. EAC 12.
