Select Uncirculated 1794 Liberty Cap Half Cent Rarity

1794 1/2 C MS 63 Brown PCGS. B-2b, C-2a, R.3. Die State IV. Writing in 1983, Breen stated that of the B-2b die marriage: "Many Uncirculated examples have been reported, but to date, we have not seen one which absolutely qualifies at this level." There is no doubt in our minds that the present example is one of, if not the finest certified representative of this variety. The features are remarkably distraction-free with a relatively smooth planchet. The clashmarks around Liberty's portrait and the faint die crack along the tops of the letters ERTY in LIBERTY (both as produced) are diagnostic of Die State IV. Both sides display even crimson-brown color that introduces a tinge of tan patina on the reverse. There is not a single area of mentionable striking softness.
Designed by Robert Scot, the 1794 half cent copied Joseph Wright's Liberty Cap cent, rather than the Rittenhouse/Eckfeldt half cent of 1793. The Philadelphia Mint delivered only 81,600 half cents using Scot's design before adopting John Smith Gardner's modified rendition of the Liberty Cap motif in 1795. The survivors of the 1794 delivery have come to be regarded as important and scarce one-year type coins.
From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.
