Attractive, Lightly Circulated 1795 Half Cent, Plain Edge and No Pole Variety
1795 1/2 C Plain Edge AU 55 PCGS. No Pole. B-5a, C-5a, High R.4. The prominent die crack on the reverse that bisects the top of the wreath assures that this specimen was struck on rolled copper planchets and not reduced large cents or Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens. While the faces are well centered, the lower right obverse and upper left reverse rims are poorly struck. While we note that even STATES is barely visible, we also remind the novice copper collector that these unfortunate features are diagnostic of this die variety. The remainder of the obverse devices, including LIBERTY and the date, are crisply delineated and free of criticism. The central reverse, however, displays weakness of definition in isolated areas. Both sides of this piece carry an even layer of brown patina with freckled red and charcoal highlights throughout the reverse. With the exception of a few planchet flakes, the surfaces are smooth and free of mentionable distractions. This is a lovely specimen that belongs in a collection of prized early coppers.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2225, PCGS# 1018, GSID# 441)
