    Description

    1795 1/2 C Plain Edge, No Pole, Thick Planchet, C-5b, B-5b, R.4, VF30 NGC. NGC has weighed and measured this piece, confirming its identification as C-5b. The diameter is 24.5 mm and the weight is 109.9 grains. This is the scarce thick planchet subvariety, showing a weak impression on the date and HALF CENT, and a slightly distorted appearance of the peripheral legends. Toned sea-green and lavender with thin marks below the cap and the E in LIBERTY. The diagonal break, inherited from C-4, is apparent within the wreath. Our EAC grade Fine 15.

    When NGC research director David Lange cracked this coin out of the holder to provide the weight and diameter, he also noticed something unexpected:
