1796 C-2 Half Cent, VG Details
Important Key Date Offering
1796 1/2 C With Pole, C-2, B-2, High R.4 -- Environmental Damage
-- NGC Details. VG. Red-steel and blue-steel surfaces create
deep, rich coloration on this rare-date half cent. Old scratches
northwest from the cheek and parallel to it left of the date are
noted for pedigree purposes and are well-blended into the patina.
Weakness is limited to the upper reverse, and wear is even. The
1796 half cent has been known as a key date in the series for over
150 years and examples turned in after the transition to the small
cent were saved by Philadelphia coin dealers, along with other
rarities like the 1802. While this increased survival rates
significantly, demand from modern collectors still exceeds supply
due to the tiny original mintage. The present offering represents
an excellent offering of an issue most often found with
