Description

Key 1796 With Pole Half Cent, C-2, Good 4

1796 1/2 C With Pole Good 4 PCGS. C-2, B-2, High R.4. The more common of the two 1796 half cent variants, though still very scarce in an absolute sense and bordering on rare. The year's strikingly low mintage for half cents--just 1,390 pieces--has made it celebrated among collectors of the denomination. This well-worn example has deep brown surfaces with a touch of cinnamon. Both sides show general striking weakness, as sometimes found. Modest porosity is present at the margins, and the obverse has numerous faded pinscratches, yet the eye appeal of this piece is strong. A noteworthy survivor for the grade. MRB Fair 2. Population: 8 in 4, 25 finer (2/11).(Registry values: P9)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 1027, Greysheet# 447)
