Description

1797 C-1, B-1 Half Cent, VF35
1 Above 1

1797 1/2 C Plain Edge, 1 Above 1, C-1, B-1, R.2, VF35 PCGS. In addition to its dramatic blunder where the date was initially entered too high and then corrected closer to the rim, this variety also undergoes dramatic changes due to extensive use. It is a popular Guide Book variety that also captures the interest of advanced collectors for its numerous die states. Fortunately, it is also the most plentiful variety of 1797 half cents with examples known in circulated grades and occasionally in Mint State grades. The obverse die is cracked and bulged with RTY showing weakness on this example that exhibits splashes of maroon patina on its olive and chocolate-brown surfaces.
