Description

1797 C-2, B-2 Half Cent, AU Details
Centered Head

1797 1/2 C Plain Edge, Centered Head, C-2, B-2, R.3 -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. The usual die state with a perfect obverse die and a reverse die crack from the border below the 2 to the tops of UN and the border over I. That crack appeared in the previous use with the 1797 C-1 half cent, so it is always present on this variety. Many 1797 C-2 half cents were struck over Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens, or mis-struck large cents. The right obverse and right reverse borders are indistinct on this nicely detailed example, suggesting the possibility of undertype at those locations, although nothing is obvious. A small depression at the upper left reverse appears to be as struck on this example that is finer than most survivors from these dies. This piece has pleasing tan and light brown surfaces with muted pistachio overtones.
Ex: Chris Victor-McCawley (privately, 2002 EAC Convention).
