Important 1797 C-3a, B-3c Half Cent, Fine 12
Struck Over Spoiled Cent
1797 1/2 C Plain Edge Fine 12 PCGS. C-3a, B-3c, R.4. The
same die combination with the Low Head obverse was used for three
sub-varieties, with either a plain edge, lettered edge, or gripped
edge. Breen claims that all of those coins were actually struck in
1800, from backdated dies. They were apparently all struck on
spoiled cent stock (misstruck or error large cents that were
unsuitable for use). Indeed, this piece shows just such an
undertype in the form of large dentils on Liberty's neck and inside
the wreath. The surfaces are pleasing with light olive color,
deeper brown on the devices. The surfaces are smooth with few
imperfections on each side. EAC 8.From The Nora Bailey Collection.(Registry values: P6)
